Your Every Day Should Include A Slice of Spice!

Hi there!  I’m Michele…thanks for checking out A Slice of Spice!  To me, the spice of life is in the abundance of joy that can be found everywhere if one chooses to look for it.  In creating the life you want; in  the simple pleasures waiting smack in the middle of all the complications; in learning and growing no matter how old you are; in allowing yourself to laugh each and every day.  I hope you will look around my site and find something inspiring.  And you can get updates as they happen by subscribing to my newsletter.

THE WHO

I am a lover of all things food – the sights, the smells, the gadgets.  It is my comfort zone! I am also a published poet, have a degree in journalism, and work a full- time job in addition to running A Slice of Spice.  I love music (but, as my mom always told me, can’t carry a tune in a bucket),  crafts, game nights with the family, and I have been accused of being too perky.

I am blissfully married to my found late-in-life soulmate, and between us we have three almost- grown kids who are preparing to go out and make their own marks on the world.

I adore inspirational quotes…my current favorite is by Albert Camus,

“In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.”

So, don’t be surprised to see them sprinkled throughout this site, and I hope they inspire you as much as they do me.

THE WHAT

I’ve been cooking since I was a little girl.  My dad used to stand me on a chair next to him and let me help him with dinner.  My Easy Bake oven saw many a Pineapple Upside-down Cake back then!

As a busy, working mom I have experienced the challenge of feeding my family healthy food on a budget at the end of a crazy day.  But let’s face it, I’m from Texas, where the barbeque sauce is sweet, the chicken is fried (well, almost everything is fried), the most popular seasoning after salt is bacon grease, and gravy is a food group.  Delicious, but not conducive to healthy living.

So A Slice of Spice is dedicated to sharing delicious food, inspiring moments, family togetherness, unique ideas, and nostalgic journeys. You’ll get scrumptious recipes for every day of the week and every occasion, mostly healthy but with some indulgences mixed in (you can take the girl out of Texas, but…she still needs a treat now and then!). We will also share cooking tips and kitchen hacks, fun facts about ingredients we use every day; ways to use those ingredients that aren’t as common; food adventures on the road; and the occasional visit to Mamo’s Kitchen.

THE WHY

I’ve been there! I know how difficult it can be to get any dinner on the table after a day of work (whether you work outside of the home or are a stay-at-home parent) while corralling kids, pets, schedules, chores…much less a complicated dish or an international cuisine you would love to try! My goal is to help you with shortcuts, prepping ahead for weeknight ease, understanding flavor profiles, adding “semi-homemade” choices to your index of recipes, and creating some delights to brighten any day, all with a touch of perky southern quirkiness!
