Spicy Doesn’t Always Mean Hot

Most of us know someone who loves hot food. You know who I mean, that guy (or gal) who will eat the hottest pepper sauce while sweat runs down his forehead and tears are in his eyes? That is definitely NOT me! My thought is if the spice is so hot it numbs your taste buds so you miss all the deliciousness in the food, then what is the point?

“It’s like spicy food – sometimes you have to tone it down so more people can enjoy it.” – Babyface

But I do love to add A Slice of Spice (see what I did there?) to all of my recipes. Sometimes it’s a bit of heat, sometimes a touch of acidity to brighten a dish, or an unexpected flavor that surprises the palate. These Spicy Avocado Tuna Boats with Nando’s PERi-PERi Sauce were definitely a great fit!

What’s A PERi-PERi?

Peri Peri Peppers

PERi-PERi is a pepper, also known as the African Bird’s Eye Chili. Nando’s, which began it’s culinary journey as a restaurant featuring its now-famous PERi-PERi Chicken, grows its own PERi-PERi throughout Africa – mostly in Mozambique, supporting over 1400 local farmers. You can make PERi-PERi sauce at home if you have a source for the peppers; but this sauce from Nando’s is easy to order online, free of artificial preservatives, flavors, colors, and MSG, AND it is delicious; so I’m all for pushing the “easy button” on this one!

Nando’s PERi-PERi Sauce also comes in all levels of heat, from Mild to XX Hot, and in some wonderful flavors such as Original, Garlic, Lemon Herb, and Coconut Lemon. Nando’s also has a line of Perinaise, which I think will shine on my Vietnamese Bánh Mì sandwiches!

Back To The Food!

So, back to the delicious topic at hand…these amazing Spicy Avocado Tuna Boats with Nando’s PERi-PERi Sauce. My daughter Kat and I are always looking for new ways to (1) take lunch to work (2) use tuna, and (3) eat more avocado, which we love. This recipe is perfect! We did not miss the mayonnaise because the yogurt and avocado were so creamy, and the zing from the PERi-PERi Sauce just made our mouths dance!

These tuna boats are simple to make as well (no cooking!) Just half the avocado; hollow out the center of one half to make room for the filling; mix the tuna, scooped out avocado, cream cheese, yogurt, onion, PERi-PERi sauce, lime juice, salt and pepper; then fill the avocado half with the tuna mixture. Drizzle on more PERi-PERi sauce to taste if desired. I used the medium garlic sauce for ours, but this would be amazing with any of Nando’s sauces. And if you need more inspiration, there are some great recipes on Nando’s website!
